UPDATE: A man and a woman from Pennsville, NJ, were arrested on March 25 in connection with the string of Haddonfield donation can thefts. More here…

A surveillance video at retail store Jamaican Me Crazy in Haddonfield, NJ depicts a couple stealing a donation can benefiting Furrever Friends Rescue on March 17th. Two other cans in Haddonfield were discovered missing this week when volunteers went to collect the change in the cans. The money is used to pay for medical care for abandoned pets. It is a hardship to the organization to lose these critically needed funds. The theft has been reported to police.
The following surveillance video clearly shows a man stealing the donation can in Jamaican Me Crazy. If you recognize this man or the woman accompanying him, please call Haddonfield Police at 856-429-3000:
The story was covered by Eyewitness News on CBS affiliate KYW TV in Philadelphia on March 23:
The story was also covered in the Philadelphia Inquirer on March 25.
“Currently, we have an outstanding vet bills for spay neuter surgeries as well as special needs cases”, explained Furrever Friends Board Secretary Jen Andersch. “Last month we had a kitty that needed eye surgery, and another one who need an emergency operation to stop internal bleeding after a difficult birth.” With donations at an all time low, the organization relies on the money collected in the cans.
Furrever Friends is a non-profit, all-volunteer animal rescue group that helps unwanted pets find homes. Animals are housed in private foster homes or retail stores and lovingly cared for by unpaid volunteers. The organization survives on the kindness of donations from the public as they do not receive government funding.
There are twelve donation cans at various retail stores in Camden and Gloucester Counties: the three missing were from Haddonfield shops Jamaican Me Crazy, The Bistro and Harrison’s.
“We have over 60 cats that need homes, and are receiving dozens of requests each day to help more,” explains Furrever Friends Vice President Suzanne Pomeroy. “After losing about $250 from those stolen cans, now there is less money to help those who need us”.
A $200 reward is being offered for the safe return of a lost cat that was adopted from Furrever Friends. The cat, which answers to “Gertrude” or “Gerti,” is a female tortoiseshell with a beige nose who was last seen in the Lakewood Manor Apartments complex off Lakeland Rd. in Blackwood, NJ, on Saturday, Feb. 12.

UPDATE: Gertrude was found safe and sound on March 17, and returned to her home. Thanks to everyone who worked toward Gertrude’s safe recovery!
